Berry picking

That was the main thing today. Got up a little early and ate breakfast and had coffee.

Linda and Betsy went kayaking and I took a shower and washed my hair. When they got back Betsy and I went blueberry picking at the U Pick down the road.

I kind of got in a fugue, and ended up picking five pounds. What I am going to do with them all I don't know! I had some of them for lunch and I'll keep putting them on my breakfast cereal.

The rest of the day I read and went to DCslash. I went to the Starsky and Hutch panel, and the Good Omens panel, and Nox's Tea Party, and those were fun.

I Teamed the FWiB, thouogh only for an hour because it butted up to the Good Omens panel.

Tomorrow I don't think there's to much in DCslash I want to see so I'll spend more time with family and the cottage.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. DCslash.

3. Being here.

4. Blueberries.

5. Good books.

6. The weather wasn't too hot.

Starting Tuesday afternoon, I packed my media into boxes, removed bookcases, installed bookcases, and moved media from boxes back onto shelves. I finished this morning – so about four days total. But I’m happy to say the new Media Wall is in place.

Got up around 12:00 and had breakfast and coffee. Walked down to the lake in my nightgown and ran into Linda walking the dog, Charlie. Walked with her a bit, then came back to the cottage.

Took a shower, and discovered there was no hot water. Showered in cold, quickly, but did not wash my hair, which I had planned. Got dressed, and tried to see if there was any reason there was no hot water. I didn't see anything.

Betsy came by to say hello, and ask me if I wanted to go to Hellers farm stand, and to Bye's Popcorn and I said yes. I told her about the hot water, and she looked too but also couldn't see anything.

We went back to her cottage, and she told Piet about the hot water. He came and looked, and he spotted the problem, which was that a valve had been turned which meant the water was bypassing the heater. He fixed it and I now have hot water. Yay! Hot shower and hair washing tomorrow.

Then we say Linda, and Betsy asked her if she wanted to come with us, and she said yes so we all went to Hellers. I got corn, peaches, plums, and a cucumber. The peaches aren't ripe though so I have them out.

Then we went to Bye's and waited for them to open. We talked a bit on line with some of the other people waiting. Finally it was time, and I got a small regular, and a bag of cashew caramel corn.

Came back to the cottage and put stuff away. I watched one of the panels for DCslash, and had just finished and was going to read on the front porch when Alan came by to visit. So he sat and we talked for awhile. That was nice.

After he left, it was almost 7:00 so I asked the FWiB if he wanted to Team, and we did. Most of his email has been going to my Spam folder today, which is frustrating. I keep getting annoyed that he's not answering me and then finding it in Spam.

Anyway, we Teamed, and then I went to DCslash again until 11:00 when I decided I wasn't interested in either of the last two panel choices so now I'm doing this.

Talked to the Kid today too, she's fine and got more job interviews lined up! Texted with [personal profile] mashfanficchick, ze is sending me something, I don't know what... Texted with L, from Friday night, she said the new person showed up again which is great.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Got to Hellers.

3. And to Byes.

4. Piet got the hot water fixed.

5. Family.

6. DCslash.

My Dress-Up Crossdresser

Between Oregon Country Fair, volunteer work, and packing and moving my library, I haven’t had much time to watch anime – and I fell weeks behind. I’ve recently been trying to dig out of the hole, one series at a time. Catching up means watching three or four weeks of episodes for a show. I was three weeks behind when I caught up with My Dress-Up Darling S2 earlier this week.

The last part of episode 14 and most of episode 15 featured a new character, Amane Himeno, a crossdressing cosplayer. Amane’s story was respectful and upbeat, which was unusually pleasant. The treatment of crossdressers in anime varies widely but has been less tropish in recent years. Mostly. I appreciated that Marin and Gojō took Amane’s story in stride. I liked Amane a lot.

Amane shared a number of crossdresser makeup and costume tips. None were new to me, but I was impressed that the show went into careful and correct detail. The orange concealer showed that the mangaka did his research. I’ve been coached by professional makeup artists as well as drag queens, so I think I’ve seen all the tricks.

At Kumoricon, there are plenty of crossdressing cosplayers, and they’re all nice and fun people; we’ve had pleasant chats. And a few (not a lot) were as cute as Amane Himeno.

Amane Himeno
Amane Himeno
My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 14

The makeup store scenes in the episode reminded me of my Visit to Hollywood Lights three years ago. After the episode I was inspired to revisit the Hollywood Lights Website, and I was sad to learn that they no longer sell professional makeup. I’m glad I had a successful and nostalgic visit with them in 2022.

Out of curiosity, I used the Ben Nye site to see where I could get makeup if I needed to (although I really doubt I’ll ever need any more than what I already have). I was surprised to find Costume Avenue in Beaverton! Gosh. I guess I never had to drive into Portland. I’ll go check out the store one of these days. I drive right by it when I visit Debbie in Hillsboro every week (although the store is closed on the days I visit Debbie).

Got up at 7:00 and got ready to go... breakfast, coffee, shower, dressed, final packing of things that had to be last minutes. Put down food and water for the cat, and locked up and called the Uber.

To my shock the difference between a share and an Uber X was about $20! So despite misgivings I did share, and ended up waiting while the driver dropped the other person off. But even so Imade it tothe station on time.

They called the train, and I went to get on line to board when a porter offered to have me use the elevator. Maybe I looked overburdened or something. But of course I said yes, and managed to get ahead of most of the line, and get a window seat facing forward.

The trip was good up until we had mechanical failures and waited a good long time not moving while they were fixed. We ended up being about an hour late getting in. I ate lunch on the train of course, had a stromboli and a diet Coke. [personal profile] mashfanficchick called and we talked for a bit.

After I got to Depew, I called an Uber to the Tops where Linda was to meet me. Pleasant surprise, it wasn't near as expensive as I feared.

I met up with Linda at Tops and did some shopping. Not much, since I can get Instacart down here. I called middle Brother, he's fine, and went swimming Tuesday.

Then we drove back to the cottage and she helped me in with my stuff

I put my food away, and made dinner, then hooked up the computer. I forgot to bring a two to three prong adapter so I had to plug it in to the kitchen, but, the WiFi borrowed from the Mullanes seems to reach this far.

I Teamed the FWiB briefly, to make sure it would work, and it does.

That's really all for now. I'm quite tired and still have more to do, like see if there's a bed that's made or if I have to find the sheets.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Linda.

3. Made it here.

4. The WiFi reaches.

5. Uber.

6. Bed soon, I hope.

Tomorrow's the day

I spent the day in final preparations for my trip. I got up at around 11, ate breakfast and had coffee, and then puttered online for awhile.

I gathered myself together and cleaned the cat pan and put out the little extra pans. Then I put on clothes and took the litter out and walked around the block.

Other things I did during the day were shave my legs, packed my meds and toiletries, pack my passport and the train ticket and my sunglasses. Pack the books I want to bring in my NYPL backpack rather than a tote bag. I got a phone call from [personal profile] mashfanficchick and talked to zer a bit.

Then at 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB, until 7:25 when RK got here and I gave him my keys so he can take care of Oreo and Christie.

Got back on with the FWiB but about 10 minutes later he got a phone call from his brother. So we got off and I killed time til 8:00 when I got on Discord for my D&D game.

We played til about 9:30, then spent some time talking about future plans. We finished up a bit before 10:00 and I Teamed the FWiB again for awhile.

Got off and fed the pets, and then made my dinner. Then I started here.

Tomorrow is the day I leave!

Gratitude List:

1. The FWIB.

2. MY D&D group.

3. Ready to go.

4. RK.

Meeting night

My alarm went off at 10:00 but I turned it off and dozed til about 11:30. Then I got up and had breakfast and coffee.

Then I puttered online for a long time. But I finally pulled myself together, tossed on some clothes and took out the garbage and recycling. It took two trips, and I walked around the block each time so I got a little bit of exercise anyway.

Then I worked myself up to trying to do something about the turtle tank. I had even more trouble with the siphon this time, I was only able to get about a half bucket out. I replaced it with three buckets of clean water so it's better, but not good. I will have to make this a priority after I get back from my vacation.

Anyway, I did that, and then went to the bedroom to lie down and play solitaire. I did that til 6:30 when I came out to the living room and realized I had forgotten about the bag of trash I filled in the bedroom yesterday. So I took that out too and walked around the block.

Got back just in time to Team the FWiB. We talked until it was time for my Al-anon meeting. Annoyingly my Petco turtle food shipment arrived just as I was getting started. I turned the meeting over to S, and got the turtle food. The meeting itself was very good, M and S were both there plus a beginner.

After that I had dinner, and then went to the bedroom and called [personal profile] mashfanficchick. There was the possibility that we would be going to a game tomorrow but alas no. Probably for the best, I still have things I need to get done before I leave, and I have D&D tomorrow night too.

Played solitaire til pet feeding time, and then I fed the pets, and here I am.

The good news is that cousin Linda Facebook messaged. She isn't going to pick me up at the train station, but she has an errand at the Home Depot in Lockport, so she is going to pick me up at the Lockport Tops supermarket, so I only have to get an Uber that far. Or a regular taxi. That saves me a lot of money, so I am very grateful.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Linda.

3. My pets.

4. My turtle food came.

5. My meetings and the people there.

6. Vacation soon!

Packing

Normally I would do my packing closer to when I leave but because there's the possibility of going to a day baseball game on Wednesday with [personal profile] mashfanficchick and then D&D in the evening, and because I have my meeting tomorrow night, I decided to do my packing today.

So I got up around 11:00 and had breakfast and coffee, and read online, and then went and went through all my clothes and packed my suitcase. It took awhile, but I finally got it done, plus a garbage bag of junk filled up, and a pile of empty clothing boxes for recycling.

Then I bit the bullet and called Amtrak to find out if there was a problem with my reservation, because the second part of it, my return trip, vanished from my app. They say there is no issue and all is well. I printed out the receipt and paper ticket anyway.

I also went online to the post office and had my mail held for while I'm gone.

Then I finished reading the Agatha Christie I've been working on, The Pale Horse. I had figured out part of the solution but not all of it, and there was a nice twist at the end.

I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick to see if ze knew yet about Wednesday, but ze didn't. i played solitaire on my phone, and at 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB. We talked for over an hour and a half, so that was nice.

Then I had dinner, and went to the bedroom to play more solitaire until pet feeding time. I texted the Kid, because I thought I remembered she had a job interview today, which she did, and thinks she did well.

Then I fed the pets and started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My packing is done, and there is still a little room in my suitcase.

3. The Kid's job interview.

4. Cleaned some of the mess in my bedroom.

5. RK, I texted him about caring for my pets today.

6. My train reservation is OK.

My alarm went off at 9:00 but i was foolish and turned it off and went back to sleep til 10:30. That meant I had to rush to get ready to go out by 11:30, which I needed to do to get to brunch on time.

I had coffee, and showered and dressed, and made it out by 11:20-something, so that was good. I took the 20 bus to the subway and the 7 to the N. I actually arrived at the restaurant by 12:15.

The Kid and her boyfriend were a little late, but not much, and we got seated, inside so I could take off my sunglasses. We ordered mimosas, and then food. I got the Nutella French toast, with strawberries and blueberries, which was delicious. Had a second mimosa after.

I brought with me all the stuff that I've been accumulating to give the Kid, including her very belated birthday card and presents.

We had some nice talk, and then after we finished, we walked together to where we went separate ways. I took the subway, and went to see [personal profile] mashfanficchick

We hung out and didn't do much. At 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB from my phone, and at 8:30 I called Middle Brother. He is fine, nothing new.

We had dinner, rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. And then we started looking into ordering me a different laptop, since it is looking like they'll end up refunding the one I ordered. However, we ended up not doing anything.

I Ubered home, and fed the pets.

And now it's time for bed and reading. I'm reading more Agatha Christie, this one is Pale Horse. It's one of her creepier ones.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid.

3. Middle Brother doing well.

4. Good books.

5. Reading glasses.

6. Air conditioning.

I woke up at 4:00ish this morning, and couldn't get back to sleep until I went out at 6:00 and had my Cheerios. Then I went back to bed and slept til 9:00 when I got up for my Al-anon meeting.

The Kid asked me yesterday if I wanted to have dinner in Manhattan this weekend, and at 2:00 am she texted me the name and directions to the place she wanted to go. Spoiler alert, we didn't.

I got up and washed my hair and put the curl stuff in it because of going out, but even so I got to my meeting quite early. It was a very good meeting.

Then we went to the diner, I wasn't going to eat anything, because of going out for dinner, but I was too hungry, because of having my breakfast at 6:00. So I ate a bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant, and had iced coffee. Then, the Kid texted me, change in plans, we're having brunch tomorrow in Astoria instead. So it was good I ate.

I took the 13 bus to the end, which is at Roosevelt Ave, and went to Duane Reade where I got a pair of reading glasses, 2.0 magnification, and a birthday card for the Kid.

Then I went to the place where I got my face waxed, and had it done again. Then I came home by the 44. I went to the Starsky and Hutch chat, and had a good time talking. We chatted until 7:00, when we ended, and I Teamed the FWiB.

We talked a little over an hour, and then I went and tried on shirts to see what I wanted to wear tomorrow, and try out the new reading glasses. The glasses work just right.

And then it was pet feeding time so I did that, and then started here.

I think I'll call [personal profile] mashfanficchick after I finish here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid.

3. My meetings and the people there.

4. Waxed face.

5. Reading glasses.

6. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.

[personal profile] lovelyangel
I’ve been underwater for... let’s see... 9 days – and am just now finishing the last of multiple full-day commitments (Oregon Country Fair, OCF photo post-processing, OCF journaling, volunteer work for my church). This means that starting this afternoon, I can return to packing up books, which has been on hold since July 10. I can also resume watching anime... and start working on a huge backlog of household tasks. I have felt a little besieged.

So I was surprised and happy this morning when I saw that on the first night of their concert tour in Korea, TWICE sang the TWICE Song in the encore. This is hilarious – and something we never, ever thought we’d see. For years, TWICE has (sort of) tried to distance themselves from their sugary sweet and cute song days – and, also, the TWICE Song isn’t really an official, production song – more of an in-house joke. (It’s not on an album or anything.) But the TWICE Song, eight-years-old, is a fan favorite – and TWICE seemed to have fun performing it on stage. (Encore songs are chosen at random by spinning a big wheel.)

There are several fan recordings of the performance on YouTube, the best of which is This One. I’ve watched the video many times today. My girls Momo and Sana were gorgeous – but most adorable was Tzuyu (at the end). Here are the Lyrics in English.

I mostly post about:
Quiet living, books with margin notes, tea blends, visible mending, soft rituals, and the small things that anchor a day — light through curtains, a sentence that stays with you, a note Rae once wrote.

My hobbies are:
Reading (especially secondhand or annotated books), mending clothes by hand, brewing tea like it’s a spell, walking in the woods, archiving, journalling, and noticing the in-between moments.

My fandoms are:
Discworld (especially the witches), gentle fantasy, soft folklore, The Last Unicorn, Stardew Valley, and anything that feels like wool and wonder.

I'm looking to meet people who:
Love longform blogging, notice quiet details, have soft rituals of their own, and enjoy the kind of friendship that builds slowly and kindly over time.

My posting schedule tends to be:
Weekly-ish — sometimes more if I’m feeling thoughtful or tea-drowsy.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:
Cruelty masked as “honesty,” bigotry, mockery, or a lack of care for the softer parts of others.

Before adding me, you should know:
I’m quiet and sentimental, I tag generously, and I write as if I’m tucking things away in a drawer. Rae (she/her) appears often in my posts — she’s someone I love, even if I rarely say it aloud. If you like slow friendships and soft mornings, I’d be glad to meet you.

Started out with a therapy session at 10:30. That was good. Then I had breakfast, and coffee, and showered and before I dressed I used the dry shampoo I got last night. My hair looks... OK, not really great, but better.

Anyway, then I played solitaire for awhile, until it was time to leave for my eye follow up exam. I took the 44 bus to Main and 39th, and then the 13 from Roosevelt. Which is absurd, before the reorganization of the Queens buses I could have walked directly to the 13 and taken that straight there. But anyway, I got there, and they examined me and said I was healing well, and could stop most of the precautions, go down to three drops a day for one week, then two for one week, then one for one week. But I still have to use the sunglasses for a month. Bummer.

Then I took the 12 bus back, as an experiment to find out where it goes to now. I discovered I had to get out either at Parsons Blvd, and on Main Street at 37th. Either one means a longish walk home, but I guess Parsons is better. That's where Oldest Brother's nursing home is.

Anyway, I went to 37th and walked home from there. Stopped at the little coffee shop that we went to when the cousins were visiting Oldest Brother before he died. The coffee shop is very nice and I had said I would go back. I had a lavender cream latte.

I got home with about half an hour to spare before I left for my meeting in the Bronx, so I puttered online.

At 5:15 I took the 44 bus into the Bronx and transferred to the 50 at Lafayette, because again due to the bus reorganization, the 50 no longer stops at 35th.

I had my usual two slices of pizza and went to the meeting. It was very good, we had a newcomer. Hopefully she comes back.

After the meeting was over, M drove me to the bus stop and waited til 9:00. Then to get home I took the 50 to 31st in Queens and transferred to the 25 for one stop to get to my stop, I HATE THIS REORGANIZATION!!!

Got home and Teamed the FWiB, We talked for a bit less than an hour, so that was nice.

This morning the Kid texted me to see if I would like to get together this weekend, so I'm going to call her in a bit to see if there's any plans yet.

I texted RK and he's willing to feed my pets while I'm gone. I also got an answer from Carrie M, that it's OK again to use the WiFi from next door.

Now if only my computer would be delivered!

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. My eye is doing well.

4. My friends.

5. The Busy Bee coffee shop.

6. The Kid.

Got up at 10:00, had breakfast and coffee, and showered and dressed. Then I went over to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's place.

We hung out and did some chores around the place for some hours. Then at about 7:30 we went out shopping by Lyft, to BJ's first, where I called Middle Brother. He is fine.

Then we took another Lyft to Stop and Shop. Somehow we ended up there for a very long time, and when we went back to zer place, ze didn't feel like making dinner so we called in Indian.

Eventually I Ubered home. Now to bed.

No sign of my new computer.

4. Got some stuff I needed.

5. Mango lassi with dinner.
